BETHESDA, Md. — Marriott International is making progress on its 2010 goal to double its European portfolio to 80,000 rooms by 2015, according to the Cleveland-based HotelNewsNow.com.

“We are already almost halfway to our goal, having added 17,000 rooms signed or opened,” Amy McPherson, president and managing director of Europe, told HotelNewsNow.com.

In 2011, Marriott introduced four new brands in Europe: The Autograph Collection, Residence Inn, Edition Hotels and AC Hotels by Marriott.

In addition to Europe, the U.K. and Ireland, the Maryland-based hotel company has continued to expand around the world. “At the end of Q3, our lodging portfolio encompasses nearly 3,700 properties worldwide,” McPherson told HotelNewsNow.com. “As well as focusing on Europe, we’re significantly expanding in Asia, the Middle East and the Americas.”

In fact, plans have just been announced to open a hotel in Bahrain with the launch of JW Marriott Manama, Bahrain Hotel in 2016.
