WASHINGTON — This year, 734 businesses in the U.S. — including hotel companies — were recognized for their commitment to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) equality through inclusion in the Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s 2014 Corporate Equality Index, which rates American workplaces on their adoption of inclusive policies, practices and benefits.

“This year will go down in history as the year that corporate support for equality left the boardroom and reached each and every corner of this country. More than ever, fair-minded companies are guaranteeing fair treatment and compensation to millions of LGBT employees in all 50 states. But, beyond these sound business practices of internal diversity and inclusion, these same companies are fighting for full legal equality in state legislatures, in the halls of Congress and before the U.S. Supreme Court,” said Chad Griffin, president, Human Rights Campaign Foundation.

Choice Hotels International Inc., Hilton Worldwide Inc., Hyatt Hotels Corp., Marriott International Inc. and Wyndham Worldwide Corp. achieved a 100-per-cent score. Employers who achieved a top rating had systems in place to prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation, such as partner health/medical insurance and transgender-inclusive health-insurance coverage, all of which positively engage the external LGBT community.
