EDMONTON — The Hyatt Place Edmonton has opened its doors following years of delays. According to the Edmonton Journal, construction of $55-million hotel — the first major new downtown Edmonton hotel in a generation — was delayed by underground gasoline contamination and city permit holdups.

It’s the first Canadian location for the Hyatt Place brand, which has an average daily rate of $200. Amenities at the 255-room property include a fitness room, a large hot tub, meeting space and a free hot breakfast on the second-floor lobby level, which also features a bar and cafe.

According to GM Walid Elawadly, the hotel expects mainly social and sports groups to stay on weekends, with business travellers as the weekday focus. “What they’re looking for in a hotel is a quick, healthy breakfast, a great gym they can work out in 24 hours a day and a beautiful room where they have enough space to work conveniently.”
