VICTORIA — Recent renovations at the Fairmont Empress Hotel in Victoria have led unionized hotel workers to issue a strike notice.

Issued on Aug. 29, this notice comes just ahead of the long weekend and could initiate a strike as early as Sept. 1. According to the union, a strike would involve almost 500 hotel workers, including housekeeping, culinary, grounds keeping, serving, guest relations, maintenance and engineering staff.

Unifor — the union to which these workers belong — cites understaffing and changes to workloads resulting from the historic hotel’s renovations as the reasons behind this action.
