WINNIPEG — This past weekend demolition crews began tearing down the Carlton Inn, located in downtown Winnipeg, reports CBC News.

CentreVenture, a downtown development agency, bought the building last year and is replacing it with a new hotel complex. The agency plans to develop the site into a sports, hospitality and entertainment district (SHED) that will include the MTS Centre, the Winnipeg Convention Centre, the Metropolitan Theatre and the Burton Cummings Theatre.

As part of the redevelopment plan, the agency also bought the St. Regis Hotel on Smith Street. CBC News
