JASPER, Alta. — The Government of Alberta recently issued an Alberta Emergency Wildfire Alert for the municipality of Jasper and Jasper National Park including an evacuation order. The wildfire made its way to the town and several structures caught fire, including the historic Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge.

In an update posted to its Instagram account, the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge said, “the hotel did incur fire damage, [but] most of the structures, including the main lodge, remain standing and intact. While we’ll need time to assess the full scale of the damage and the timelines required for repair and restoration, we’re deeply relieved that much of the property was spared and the resort will re-open in the future.”

One of the most significant impacts has been on the Maligne Lodge. Owned and operated by Decore Hotels, the lodge was completely destroyed. In a statement on its website, Karyn Decore, president & CEO of Decore Hotels said, “Thank you to everyone who has reached out to us to share their memories of the Maligne Lodge and Wicked Cup. These mean so much to us and we’re so glad to have had the opportunity to be part of your vacations in Jasper. At the moment, whilst we’re waiting to determine the wildfire’s impact on our sister property, the Tonquin Inn, we’re focused on caring for our staff and our Jasper community.”

Other travel spots that have been confirmed to have been struck by the wildfire include Alpine Village Cabin Resort, Tekarra Lodge and Mount Robson Inn, according to The Albertan. Details about the extent of the wildfire damage in and around the Jasper town site are still emerging.
