storm-travel-haults-as-irene-forces-flight-cancellationsTORONTO — A number of flights were cancelled or delayed over the weekend at major Canadian and U.S. airports, due to tropical storm Irene pounding the East Coast, reports CBC News.

According to the news service, The Greater Toronto Airport Authority reported that of its scheduled 600 Sunday flights, 82 were cancelled.

Most of the flights were to or from areas associated with the U.S. and Canadian East coast, including New York, New Jersey, Boston, Washington, Halifax and Quebec.

Porter Airlines issued cancellations for Newark and Boston flights on Sunday and updated the list of cancellations Monday for flights to Newark, Boston, Moncton and Halifax.

Air Canada had also issued warning on its website for Atlantic Canada, Quebec, U.S. northeast and US Northwest for Monday, August 29, 2011.
