VICTORIA — A deal has been reached between unionized staff and the owners of Victoria’s Fairmont Empress Hotel, reports CBC News — effectively averting a strike entering the long weekend.

Earlier this week, Unifor issued a 72-hour strike notice on behalf of the hotel’s almost 500 hotel workers, including housekeeping, culinary, grounds keeping, serving, guest relations, maintenance and engineering staff. Union officials had cited concerns over staffing levels and the increased workload associated with cleaning the recently renovated rooms as the key reasons for this action.
