HENDERSONVILLE, Tenn. — The Americas and Asia Pacific have showed a year-over-year increase in hotel pipeline activity at the end of the first quarter, according to March 2022 data from STR.

In Europe, in comparison with March 2021, 226,597 rooms are in construction (down 12.2 per cent) 158,057 rooms are in the final planning stages (down 12.7 per cent), 164,690 rooms are in planning (up 5.8 per cent) and the total under contract came in at 549,344 (down 7.7 per cent). Germany and the U.K. lead Europe in total rooms in construction with 42,712 and 31,796 rooms respectively.

In the Asia Pacific, 482,689 rooms are in construction (up 4.3 per cent), 147,854 rooms are in the final planning stages (down 19.3 per cent), 315,956 rooms are in planning (up 16.9 per cent) and the total number of rooms under contract is 946,499. In this region, China has the most rooms in construction with 301,879, followed by Vietnam at 32,804.

In the Middle East and Africa, 126,860 rooms are in construction (down 10.6 per cent), 37,830 rooms are in the final planning stages (down 17.2 per cent), 69,398 rooms are in planning (up 29.6 per cent) and the total rooms in construction is sitting at 234,088 (down 2.9 per cent). Saudi Arabia (38,181) and the United Arab Emirates (30,367) lead in construction activity.

Finally, in the Americas, 207,018 rooms are in construction (down 14 per cent), 209,353 rooms are in the final planning stages (down 17.7 per cent), 346,277 rooms are in planning (up 30.3 per cent) and the total number of rooms under contract came in at 762,648 (up 0.3 per cent). The U.S. holds the majority of rooms in construction, followed by Mexico with 14,317 and Brazil with 7,080.
