WINNIPEG — The Red River Exhibition Association is hoping the City of Winnipeg will approve a $140-million plan for new restaurants, a hotel or two, a theatre, an arena and shops near Assiniboia Downs racetrack, reports CBC News.

“Can we compete with Regina? Of course we can. Can we compete with Saskatoon? Of course we can. There’s a lot of assets within this community to sell. And we just don’t have the facility to support it,” Garth Rogerson, a Red River businessman, is quoted as saying by CBC News.

The project will be privately funded. Rogerson is hoping to have the development plans approved by the end of the year.
