CLARENVILLE — Earlier this week, Choice Hotels Canada announced that its Quality Hotel in Clarenville, Nfld. was named 2021 Canadian Hotel of the Year.

The property took top honours over more than 330 hotels in the Choice Hotels Canada family. To qualify for this prestigious award, the winning hotel must have received a 2021 Platinum Guest Satisfaction Award.

The owner of the hotel, Clayton Hospitality established by the Sparkes family in 1968, is a family-run, Newfoundland business owned by siblings Judy Sparkes-Giannou and Bruce and Steve Sparkes.

“This win is especially notable considering the hotel has only been in our system for two years,” says Brian Leon, president of Choice Hotels Canada. “We are delighted for Judy, Bruce, Steve and the team at Clayton Hospitality for having the vision to develop a property that is not only top-rated for its superior guest experience, but also represents an important economic driver for the community.”

The Quality Hotel in Clarenville was a legacy hotel property, which was purchased by Clayton Hospitality and underwent a full-scale $2-million renovation prior to opening in February 2019 under the Quality brand.

“We have our wonderful staff to thank for this prestigious honour, led by our general manager Susan Godfrey,” says Judy Sparkes-Giannou, managing director of Clayton Hospitality. “It is the day-to-day dedication of our staff that ensures a superior guest experience.”

The hotel boasts 64 guestrooms, two meeting rooms with a total capacity of 150, a fitness centre and onsite restaurant, Bella’s Casual Dining.
