TORONTO — The Ontario government has re-imposed indoor capacity and gathering limits to help stop the spread of the Omicron variant of COVID-19.

As of Dec. 19, bars and restaurants have to close at 11 p.m., and a maximum of 10 people will be allowed to sit at a table. The sale of alcohol is not permitted after 10 p.m.  Food and drink will also be prohibited at sporting events, concert venues or theatres.

All indoor settings, except religious facilities, weddings and funerals, are limited to 50 per cent capacity. No more than 10 people can attend indoor social gatherings (down from 25), and no more than 25 can attended outdoor social gatherings (down from 100).

“Throughout this entire pandemic, we’ve never faced an enemy like Omicron given how quickly it spreads,” said Premier Doug Ford at a press conference Friday. “We need to do everything we can to slow its spread as we continue to dramatically ramp up capacity to get as many booster shots into arms as possible. Doing so is the best way to safeguard our hospital and intensive-care units.”

“This was not an easy decision to make before the holidays, but the evidence is clear that further public health measures are required to slow the spread of Omicron and prevent our hospitals from being overwhelmed,” said Christine Elliott, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health at a press conference Friday. “As we expand booster eligibility and continue our Team Ontario effort to get as many shots into arms as possible, I am urging every single person to get their vaccine if they haven’t already done so, and sign up for their booster shot as soon as possible.”

The province has also ramped up its COVID-19 vaccine booster campaign, expanding its eligibility to all adults starting today.
