WHITECOURT, Alta. ― Microtel Inn & Suites by Wyndham Whitecourt has joined the EcoStay program ― a national initiative that helps hotels measure their carbon footprint, identify and fund reduction strategies and balance their greenhouse gas emissions through carbon offsetting.

“We’re very excited to be part of the EcoStay Program,” said Lorna Knoll, director of Operations for Calgary-based MasterBuilt Hotels, master developer for Microtel in Canada. “It’s a meaningful and effective way of demonstrating our concern for the environment. We’re seeing both leisure and business travellers these days that are seriously concerned about their impact. This is our way of letting guests know we share those concerns, and we’re doing something about it.”

Under the program, MasterBuilt Hotels will use $2 per night from hotel guests to purchase carbon offsets in support of emission-reducing projects across the country such as renewable energy, energy-efficiency, agriculture and recycling.

The program also supports on-site environmental upgrades and renovations: energy-efficient lighting technologies such as dimmers and motion sensors as well as donation of leftover amenities. New-build Microtel Inn & Suites locations already include these aspects as a part of the new standards.
