TORONTO — Members of the foodservice-and-hospitality industry are stretching their legs and assembling teams in preparation for the annual JDRF Ride for Diabetes Research to be held at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre Sept. 26.

Paul Gardian, executive director, Brand Operations for Delta Hotels and Resorts, will be hosting the hotel and restaurant group at the Rock ‘n’ Roll-themed event, which involves participants from other sectors, including banking, insurance and real estate. Last year, the Toronto Ride raised more than $3 million, including $55,000 from the hospitality sector. This year, the hospitality fundraising goal is $80,000, with an overall goal of $3.25 million.

The first JDRF stationary bike ride for type-1 diabetes research began in 1988 at the former Delta Chelsea hotel on Gerrard Street in Toronto. Spearheaded by Peter Oliver, partner of Oliver & Bonacini and Simon Cooper, president and managing director, Asia Pacific, Marriott International, the event has grown to 21 cities from St. John’s, N.L., to Vancouver and has raised $7.5 million.
