As December beckons, it’s hard to believe it’s almost time to close the chapter on another year — harder still to think almost three years have passed since the pandemic first reared its ugly head. Much has changed over that time but through the ebb and flow of COVID, the industry has persevered, survived and in some cases even thrived. Certainly, it speaks to the resilience of the hospitality industry, which has experienced setbacks before and undoubtedly will again.

With this final issue of the year, we celebrate the individuals and companies that have managed to achieve excellence even through tough times. This year’s circle of winners shares a common thread — all have been around for decades and eminently experienced — a testament that knowledge gained over time counts for a great deal. But it also speaks to their ability to take tried-and-true concepts and, through the years, adapt, improve and evolve. How many companies can make the claim that they’ve been in business for more than 25 years and still be relevant with their customer base? Certainly, you can’t achieve success without being able to change with the times while keeping your concept top of mind and current.

Similarly, this year’s Pinnacle Awards represents the 33rd annual edition of the industry’s only national awards recognition program, and with the exception of not hosting this prestigious event in 2020, due to the pandemic, KML has been committed to shining the spotlight on excellence for more than three decades. At a time when the industry has been pummeled with negativity and forced to deal with excessive labour shortages, supply-chain challenges and increasing prices, it’s gratifying to bask in the glow of success and to applaud these incredible companies and individuals that have stood the test of time.

After the havoc wreaked by the pandemic, the foodservice-and-hospitality industry is finally on the road to revitalization, armed with invaluable lessons, a belief in itself and the ability to re-imagine the possibilities of tomorrow. We wouldn’t expect anything less from this resilient industry.

As we prepare for the upcoming holiday season, and look forward to slowing the pace of our frenetic lives to spend valuable and much-needed leisure time with family and friends, I’d like to take this opportunity on behalf of the entire KML team to extend the best of the season to our loyal readers and advertisers alike. May the holidays be filled with good health, happiness and, as always, a touch of magic.
