WINNIPEG — The former Place Louis Riel Hotel in Winnipeg is turning 34 of its suites into apartments and donating the furnishings to Syrian refugees.

The list includes leather hide-a-bed sofas, leather chairs with ottomans, coffee tables, end tables, lamps and dining room tables with chairs. All of the dishes, pots, pans and kettles from the fully equipped kitchens will also be passed along.

“We figured this would be a great opportunity to help out these newcomers coming to Canada. Offer them a fresh start with some quality furniture to get off to the right start and really show them what Winnipeg, Manitoba and Canadian hospitality is,” says John Saad, general manager of the building, which is now known as Antares Luxury Suites.

The items will be handed over to The Canadian Muslim Women’s Institute to be distributed to Syrian refugee families.
