VANCOUVER — Destination Canada’s (DC) latest Tourism Snapshot shows continued tourism growth for July 2019, with 3.4-million international overnight arrivals (up 5.8 per cent), setting a new record for July arrivals.
Year-to-date (YTD), Canada has welcomed an estimated record 12.43-million overnight visitors (up 4.6 per cent year-over-year).
A spike in U.S. auto overnight arrivals coincided with the Independence Day statutory holiday falling on a Thursday, which many U.S. visitors converted into a long-weekend getaway over the first weekend of July. This contributed to a 4.9-per-cent lift in U.S. auto arrivals. U.S. air arrivals expanded at a double-digit pace (up 12.3 per cent) for a fourth-consecutive month, which also contributed to a 4.9-per-cent lift in total overnight arrivals from the U.S. for July.
Three of DC’s target markets also achieved new monthly arrivals peaks for July, including the U.K. (up 19.3 per cent), Mexico (up 15.4 per cent), France (up 10.8 per cent) and India (up nine per cent). Arrivals from Germany also saw a 12.2-per-cent increase for the month.
July also marked the sixth-consecutive month of declining arrivals from China, with a 1.8-per-cent decline. This continued slowdown is attributed to a slowing economy. South Korea saw the only other declines for the month, with arrivals falling 18.7 per cent compared to July 2018.
