OTTAWA — Soon, fully vaccinated Canadians won’t need proof of a negative COVID-19 molecular test for trips lasting less than 72 hours.
The government has been pressured to drop this rule because of high costs for the test and long processing times for results.
“We’re looking at making steps to loosen up requirements while at the same time keeping Canadians safe,” said Prime Minister Trudeau in a press conference. “We’ll have an announcement to make in the coming days.”
In comparison, fully vaccinated travellers entering the U.S. must show proof of a negative COVID-19 test, but travellers can opt for a rapid antigen test that costs only $20 and provides quick results. U.S. congressman Brian Higgins called on the Canadian and U.S. governments to develop a consistent approach on both sides of the border.
“The fractured approach to border management by both the U.S. and Canadian government is contributing to public confusion, anger and frankly, it makes no sense,” said Higgins in a media statement.
The change is expected to take effect at the end of the month.
