OTTAWA — Anthony Pollard, past-president of the Hotel Association of Canada (HAC), has been inducted into the Canadian Tourism Hall of Fame. Pollard’s outstanding contribution to the tourism industry will be recognized at the Air Canada Canadian Tourism Hall of Fame Luncheon on Nov. 29, as part of the Tourism Congress.

Pollard headed up the HAC since the establishment of its national office in Ottawa in 1991 and as president, led the association’s work in making the Canadian lodging industry more productive, competitive and profitable. He has 36 years of government-relations experience, having served as special assistant to the federal Minister of Transport and senior policy advisor to the Secretary of State.

In addition to being the advocate and spokesperson for the Canadian lodging industry, Pollard has written a number of publications, including Worldwide Hospitality and Tourism Themes and Green Key – An Overnight Success Eleven Years in the Making. In 2011, he was the winner of the USA Today Award of Excellence for his publication, Hospitality for Chinese Guests. He is a frequent guest lecturer at colleges and universities, as well as a speaker at national and international conferences.

Pollard also served as managing director of the Green Key Global suite of environmental certification programs, including the GSTC Recognized Green Key Eco-Rating Program and the Green Key Meetings Program. He has also held a variety of voluntary positions, including vice-president of the International Hotel and Restaurant Association (IHRA), member of the board of directors of the IHRA, the University of Guelph, Humber College, Algonquin College and the Canadian Tourism Human Resource Council. He is a founding member of the Government Relations Institute of Canada and was previously the volunteer president of the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario. He served as an active member on many Canadian Tourism Commission committees and is a member of the editorial board of Canadian Lodging News.

Pollard has been recognized nationally and internationally with awards including the Ordre du Mérite Hôtelier du Québec, the Pinnacle Award, the Pistilli Environmental Award and the Confrérie internationale des Amis de l’Hotellerie et de la Restauration. In 2012, Pollard was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for dedicated service to his peers, to the community and to Canada. That same year he was also the recipient of Hotelier magazine’s Lifetime Achievement Award.
