FORT McMURRAY, Alta. — The Super 8 Hotel in Fort McMurray burned to the ground on Tuesday afternoon. Only smoldering remains of the structure are left as a result of the massive wildfires engulfing the northern Alberta city.

Global News’ national correspondent Reid Fiest was broadcasting live on the wildfires and forced mass evacuation while the hotel was burning in the background. Fleeing Fort McMurray residents tweeted about the hotel’s demise and took pictures as they were driving by the burning building.

The hotel located off Route 63, which is near the Fort McMurray airport, was recently awarded an eco-rating of three Green Keys for its environmental efforts and lack of a carbon footprint.

No injuries have been reported in the Super8 fire. An estimated 1,600 structures have been destroyed due to the fires in and around the area.
