VANCOUVER — Bullfrog Power and Pacific Gateway Hotel at Vancouver Airport have announced a new environmental initiative to provide green electricity for all of the hotel’s meeting spaces, as well as renewable natural gas for Pier 73 Restaurant — making Gateway Hotel the largest hotel purchaser of green energy in B.C. with Bullfrog Power.

“People have a choice of where to take their business and we believe that our sustainability initiatives work in our favour when it comes to helping them make that choice,” says Eda Koot, general manager at Pacific Gateway Hotel. “Our partnership with Bullfrog Power is one example of how we are integrating sustainability across our entire business.”

Through the agreement, Bullfrog Power ensures that its generators put 240 MWh of green power onto the grid to match the amount of conventional electricity used by the hotel’s meeting spaces.

In addition, Bullfrog Power’s producers inject 1,800 gigajoules of green natural gas into the national pipeline to match the amount of conventional natural gas used by Pier 73 Restaurant. Sourced from a unique, ground-breaking methane-capture project situated on one of Canada’s landfills, Bullfrog’s green natural gas is a climate-friendly alternative to conventional natural gas. Through innovative technology, biogas is captured, cleaned, and injected into the national natural gas pipeline, displacing fossil fuel-based gas and reducing CO2 emissions into the atmosphere.

“By choosing renewable energy with Bullfrog Power, Pacific Gateway Hotel is reducing its environmental impact and supporting the development of community-based renewable energy projects across the country,” says Anthony Santilli, VP, Sales and Marketing, Bullfrog Power.

Pacific Gateway Hotel is engaged in a range of sustainability initiatives including:

•    being a founding member of the Vancouver Tourism Facility Managers Association, a group of Tourism Facility Managers that benchmark their property’s carbon footprint
•    achieving a rating of 4 Green Keys from Green Key Global, a leading international, environmental certification body for the lodging and meetings industries
•    receiving a silver grading from Green Tourism, a not-for-profit eco-tourism organization
•    participating in the City of Richmond’s Carbon Marketplace with a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions of more than 100 tonnes
