LAS VEGAS — The D Las Vegas Casino Hotel and Golden Gate Hotel & Casino are now accepting the popular digital currency Bitcoin.

“I’m proud that the D and Golden Gate will be the first casino properties to accept Bitcoin,” said Derek Stevens, co-owner and CEO of the D and Golden Gate. “The timing is right for us to launch this initiative, and I’m happy to offer this to our customers.”

Bitcoin purchases made at these locations will be processed through tablets installed at each participating cashier. Each is programmed with BitPay, a service that streamlines transactions using mobile interfaces and allows customers to pay using their “mobile wallets.”

Bitcoin is an experimental digital currency touted as an alternative way to exchange money. To use and accept the digital currency, users must create a mobile or online “wallet.” The wallet can then be filled with Bitcoins by accepting Bitcoin payments, purchasing them directly using a bank account or purchasing them from other users.
