PARSIPPANY, N.J. — It’s no secret guests enjoy free hotel stays, so Howard Johnson is surprising randomly selected guests at more than 50 of its hotels across the U.S. and Canada with a free hotel stay.

“It’s always our goal to keep guests smiling and in good spirits whenever they’re able to stay with us — after all, that’s what vacation is all about,” said Kevin McCabe, senior director, Marketing, Howard Johnson. “We wanted to do something extra special. Travellers told us they want free rooms, so that’s what they’ll get.”

The company surveyed 1,500 of its guests throughout June and found that close to one in three travellers said being surprised with a free night’s stay is the number-1 way to make them happy, followed by a welcome gift at check-in, tickets to a local show or a free meal at a restaurant.

Having friends and family with them on vacation also makes guests happy, according to 57 per cent of Canadian respondents. The second best thing for travellers is being able to disconnect from the office, according to 22 per cent of Canadians surveyed.
