FORT MCMURRAY, Alta. — The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB) issued a strict warning to hotel operators and landlords regarding price gouging returning residents and visitors in Fort McMurray.

“Operators must maintain the prices that were in effect on April 30,” the regional municipality said in statement issued June 2. “Those landlords and property owners that are charging prices above April 30 prices will be investigated and enforcement action will be taken. We will be monitoring this issue closely.”

The Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation says even though vacancy rates have increased by more than 30 per cent and rents and room rates have been trending down since the decline in the price of oil, apartment rentals in the Fort McMurray region were still the highest in Canada as of December 2015 at an average of $1,841 per month.
