VANCOUVER — Destination Canada’s (DC) latest Tourism Snapshot revealed January to be a record-breaking month. In January 2017, Canada welcomed the highest number of overnight visitors for the month of January in Canadian history — 875,576 visitors (up 9.9 per cent year-over-year) — surpassing the previous high, established in 2003, by 4.7 per cent.

During the month, Canada saw double-digit year-over-year increases in arrivals from eight of its 11 key markets. Mexico and China were the source of the greatest influx, with increases of 51 per cent and 46 per cent respectively. This significant growth can be attributed to the Electronic Travel Authorization replacing the Visa requirement policy for Mexican travellers in December 2016, while the timing of Chinese New Year is credited with spurring growth in the Chinese market.

January also marked the ninth consecutive month of double-digit growth in overnight arrivals from the U.K. (up 15.6 per cent for the month).
