OTTAWA — Algonquin College upped its game in the worldwide hospitality arena, officially launching its Bachelor of Hospitality and Tourism Management program earlier this week at a ceremony that included more than 100 industry leaders, professors and students.

“The hospitality and tourism industry is absolutely booming here in Canada and around the globe,” said Altaf Sovani, chair of the college’s Hospitality, Tourism and Wellness programs at the launch. “When you look across the country, there are not many options for students seeking this level of hospitality and tourism training. This degree will help graduates achieve higher level positions within the industry.”

The degree program includes courses on leadership, management and entrepreneurship and will offer classes that focus on global hospitality and tourism issues, such as international management, environmental economics and sustainable tourism. “Sustainability is a critical component in the success of  tomorrow’s global hospitality and tourism industry,” explained Michael Tarnowski, developer and coordinator of the new program. “Managers need to know how to source products that have a positive effect on the bottom line, while being good stewards of the environment.”

The new program will commence in September 2012.
